O. Muradova’s case remains under the control of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

In accordance with the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Turkmen Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights officially was informed that the Human Rights Committee of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights received our submission dated November 3, 2022 regarding communication No. 2252/2013 on behalf of Mr. Annadurdy Khajyev and Mrs. Ogulsapar Muradova.

It is also reported that a copy of the letter was sent by the Committee to Turkmenistan with a reminder of the need to provide, by March 21, 2024, its comments on measures to implement the Views adopted by the Committee on April 6, 2016, regarding this communication. (Letter dated September 21, 2023).

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Turkmen Service correspondent and human rights activist Ogulsapar Muradova died in September 2006 in a Turkmen prison. Her body was released to her family with obvious signs of violence.

Immediately after her death, human rights activists and international organizations demanded an investigation into her death, but it was not carried out.

In April 2018, the UN Human Rights Committee found the government of Turkmenistan responsible for violating Muradova's right to life.
